Preschool Boost SUPPLIER

Preschool Boost is part of South Australia’s Flying Start initiative. It provides eligible early childhood services with access to extra supports that help children develop the skills they need for learning, participation and wellbeing before they start school.

Through Preschool Boost, Flying Start partner services can access approved programs and allied health supports, including speech pathology, to respond to the needs of children, families and educators within their preschool community.

 A Flying Start partner service is an early childhood service that has partnered with the South Australian Government to deliver 3-year-old preschool as part of the statewide rollout.

These services may be able to access Preschool Boost funding to purchase approved supports from the Preschool Boost menu.

A preschool program, sometimes called kindy or kindergarten, is a play-based early learning program for children before they begin full-time school.

Preschool programs are designed to support children’s development through age-appropriate learning, play, relationships, routines and guided experiences led by early childhood educators and teachers.

The early years are a really important time for children’s development. Access to quality preschool gives children more opportunities to build confidence, communication, independence, social skills and early learning foundations before starting school.

The aim is not to “schoolify” young children, but to support them through rich, play-based learning experiences that help them participate, connect and thrive.

Universal 3-year-old preschool is being introduced gradually across South Australia from 2026, with access expanding each year. By 2032, all South Australian children are expected to have access to 3-year-old preschool.

Availability will depend on the rollout schedule and whether a child’s local service is a Flying Start partner service.  Families can speak directly with their early childhood service or use the South Australian Government’s Preschool Finder to search for Flying Start partner services in their area. 

Preschool Boost funding allows eligible services to access supports that help reduce developmental vulnerability and strengthen children’s early learning and development.

This may include support in areas such as communication, language, early literacy, social participation, wellbeing, physical development and educator capability.

Preschool Boost is designed to support children within early childhood services. It is generally focused on whole-service support, educator coaching, family support and small-group programs, rather than individual 1:1 speech therapy.

Families can still access individual speech pathology separately through private funding, NDIS funding, Medicare referrals where eligible, or other service pathways

Educator coaching may include working alongside staff during play, routines, group times, book sharing, transitions or mealtimes to model practical strategies that support children’s communication and participation.

The goal is to build educator confidence and create strategies that can continue long after the speech pathologist has left the room.

Small-group support may involve play-based sessions for children who would benefit from additional opportunities to practise communication, interaction, listening, vocabulary, storytelling, early literacy or participation skills.

Groups are planned in consultation with the service and are designed to feel engaging, natural and developmentally appropriate.

Support can be delivered in person, online or through a hybrid model, depending on the needs of the service, location, availability and the type of support being provided.

Support is planned collaboratively with each service. We begin by discussing your preschool’s priorities, the needs of your children and families, and what type of support would be most useful for your team.

From there, we can develop a plan that may include coaching, group programs, family support, consultation or a combination of these.
