No, in most cases a referral isn’t required to access speech pathology services with us and you can self refer by getting in touch. If you wish to claim a rebate through Medicare however you will require your GP to complete the relevant forms which are then provided to us. Please contact us to discuss or see our funding page for further information.
An initial appointment will usually be around 60 minutes long and will involve collecting a thorough case history (information about your child’s health, early developmental milestones and your concerns or worries etc).
An assessment is usually completed with your child prior to starting therapy. This helps us to better understand your child’s strengths and identify what areas might require support. Assessment may be completed through clinical observation and play based activities or through screening assessments or standardized assessments. The exact method will vary depending on your concerns and the child’s age. In some cases, two appointments may be required to complete the relevant assessments.
Our appointments are typically offered weekly or in some cases, fortnightly. The frequency will depend on your child’s needs and will be discussed during your assessment and goal setting appointments. We typically work together in 'therapy blocks' and we will set specific goals for each block and monitor your child's progress closely to determine next steps.
We have two options for therapy appointments, a standard appointment (45 minutes direct + 15 minutes indirect = 60 minutes) and a short appointment (30 minutes direct + 15 minutes indirect = 45 minutes). The indirect time is used to write session notes, collate any resources for home practice, send relevant emails etc. Any additional administrative tasks required or requested will be discussed with you prior as these may incur additional charges.
Cancellations with less than 2 clear business days' notice, or failing to attend an appointment without due cause will incur a 50% fee for the first cancellation, and 100% of the fee will be charged for subsequent non-attendance.
Following your child’s assessment verbal feedback and a brief written summary of results is provided free of charge. A more comprehensive assessment report can be prepared upon request for an additional cost if adequate notice is given.
Whether your appointment is in person, or delivered online via telehealth it is essential that you attend with your child. This will help you and your child get the most out of their speech pathology sessions.
Therapy activities will be demonstrated during the appointment and recommendations for homework will be discussed. Follow through at home between appointments with the suggested practice will ensure your child continues to progress.
